Prompt management

Prompt management is how you store, version, and retrieve prompts outside application code. In Langfuse, a prompt is the text or chat messages plus optional config such as model name and temperature. Your app fetches the version it needs; product and domain experts can update wording in the UI without a deploy.

This page is for teams that iterate on prompts faster than they ship code. If you want to create and fetch your first prompt, start with the prompt management quickstart.

What you can do with managed prompts

Teams use Langfuse prompt management to:

  • Let non-engineers change prompt text without waiting on a release
  • Label versions such as production and staging, and roll back instantly
  • Link a prompt version to traces and compare cost, latency, and quality
  • Try edits on real inputs in the playground before promoting a version

Decouple prompt updates from code deployment

In most LLM applications, prompt iteration and code deployment are owned by different people. Product managers and domain experts iterate on prompts; engineers manage releases.

When prompts live in code, a wording change needs a review and a deploy. When they live in Langfuse, the application fetches the labeled version automatically. Prompt updates can go live without an engineering cycle.

No latency, no availability risk

Langfuse Prompt Management adds no latency to your application. Prompts are cached client-side by the SDK, so a cache hit is a memory read. Pre-fetch prompts on startup and keep a fallback so the app keeps working if Langfuse is unreachable.

Getting started

Add your first prompt in the UI or import it from your codebase, then wire the SDK fetch into your application.

Read prompt types, versioning, labels, and configuration before you design a folder structure or labeling scheme.

FAQ

What is prompt management?

Prompt management is a systematic way to store, version, and retrieve prompts outside of application code. Instead of hardcoding prompts, you manage them centrally so product and domain experts can update text without a deploy, while the application fetches the latest version at runtime.

Does prompt management add latency?

No. Langfuse prompts are cached client-side by the SDKs, so retrieving them after the first fetch is as fast as reading from memory. You can also pre-fetch prompts on startup and provide a fallback so the application keeps working if Langfuse is unreachable.

Who should own prompts โ€” engineering or product?

Both. Engineers wire prompt fetching and fallbacks into the application. Product managers and domain experts iterate on wording, examples, and model config in the UI. Labels such as production and staging control which version each environment receives.

Can I link a prompt version to production traces?

Yes. When you fetch a prompt from Langfuse and use it in a traced generation, you can link that prompt version to the trace. That lets you compare cost, latency, and quality by prompt version.
